  1. On the 17th of November 2011, the Leadership of South Sudan Democratic Forum, The Democratic Forum, dismissed the Party’s Secretary for Political and Organizational Affairs, Dr. Mario Arang Awet,  for several reasons:  (i) disobedience to directives and orders of superior officers of the Democratic Forum; (ii) open support to policies of a rival political party which, harboursmed militia; (iii) reports from friends and others put him on the  recordthat he openly campaignsagainst the leadership of the Democratic Forum; (iv) despite the fact that he represents The Democratic Forum at the South Sudan Political Parties Leadership Forum, he does not report to the leadership of The Democratic Forum; and (v) open mobilization of party members against the leadership of the Party.

South Sudan’s independence day

filemanager.php

Today is independence day for the Republic of Southern Sudan: a burst of glorious celebration in a region routinely reported in tones of gloom. This is a day that many Sudanese must have thought would never come.

There was an interminable civil war with the north that began in the 1950s. When it finally ended with a 2005 peace deal, it was almost immediately threatened by the death of the south’s leader, and Sudanese vice-president, John Garang, in a helicopter crash. But, finally, after a six-year disengagement, the climax arrived with the overwhelming vote for separation in January and now – with the grudging acquiescence of Khartoum – the birth of a nation. It is a significant achievement for the UN, helped by a little judicious arm-twisting from President Obama; and it is a great day for the South Sudanese, whose lives have been cursed by two generations of insecurity: 2 million dead, at least as many displaced. They have good cause to dance on the streets of Juba.

The SSDF – which is not related with the former Southern Sudan Defence Force (SSDF) militia and not to be confused with the South Sudan Democratic Front (SSDF) – was founded in 2001 in London by some of the most prominent exiled Southern Sudanese leaders. Amongst those veteran politicians were Joseph Lagu and Bona Malwal.Lagu had been the leader of the Anyanya rebel movement during the first civil war and signed the Addis Ababa agreement in 1972 that settled that conflict. Later he became the president of the High Executive Council of the autonomous South Sudan (1978-1982) and Vice President of the Republic (1982-1985). Malwal
